Violence Reduction Agents in Port-Au-Prince IDP Camp

After the Haitian earthquake of 2012, Abundance Fellow Dr. Louise Ivers and Partners In Health/Zanme Lesante began a program to improve access to services for victims of violence in the displaced persons camp Parc Jean-Marie Vincent, where over 50, 000 people sought shelter after the disaster.  Dr. Ivers trained 36 community agents focused on the safety and security of women. The program surveyed 1, 000 households in the camp and found a shocking degree of violence that was witnessed and endured. In collaboration with Combite pour la Paix et le Developpement (CPD), conducted door-to-door counseling to improve knowledge about medical and legal services available to victims of violence, and the rights of women living in the camps.
